In order to provide an authentic research experience at any level of inquiry, the Student Climate Data project has developed materials that support Structured, Guided, and/or Open Inquiry.
The Learning
Sequences provide a progression of activities and
investigations that build on one another for an in-depth
exploration of a topic. The materials for each learning
sequence have two options: Option 1: Structured Inquiry
includes student materials that provide a more structured
experience throughout, whereas Option 2: Guided Inquiry,
uses science notebook prompts, allowing students to take on
more responsibility for their scientific inquiry. Explore the

The Planning Guide for Scientific Research provides support for Option 3: Open Inquiry, where students take full responsibility for posing a research question and developing and carrying out their investigation plan.
The
Science Notebook Guide, Checklist for Student Work,
and the guide to Communicating Findings are
complementary guides for both students and instructors that
can be used with these and other inquiry-based investigations.
Also available are suggestions for bringing climate science
and the scientific process to Elementary-level
students.
