Biome Learning Sequence
Focus:
The impact of predicted climate change on tree species composition and biomes.
Rationale:
In order to engage students in the science of climate change it is important to make the learning experience authentic and grounded in the students’ experience and environment. The Biome Learning Sequence begins with a brief field experience to provide an opportunity for students to observe part of their natural environment (tree species composition & abundance in this example) and make connections between tree species composition and climate change. Students develop questions based on observation of natural phenomenon and use inquiry skills to conduct parts of science research. To investigate the potential impacts of climate change we begin by focusing on tree species composition/abundance in a single field plot and then move our way to tree habitat suitability and biomes.
Part 1. Conduct observations in a field plot to describe the tree species composition and abundant tree species.
Part 2. Study the Student Climate Data resources and describe anticipated trends for climate in your region.
Part 3.
If your study region is in the Eastern US, then explore the
habitat suitability of two or three abundant tree species
identified in field plot using the Tree Atlas tool.
Part 4.
Finally, consider how your biome may shift as a result of
climate change.
