Pre-requisites:

Estimated Time:

What to do and how to do it:

  1. INTRODUCTION:  Use a formative assessment technique (Frayer Model, KWL, etc.) to establish students' prior knowledge about systems, modeling, and/or biomass.
  2. In response to students' prior knowledge, establish a purpose for using the Biomass Accumulation Model to study biomass and carbon storage at a particular site. Emphasize the importance of computer models for scientists to understand the behavior of complex systems and to predict outcomes that cannot be measured directly.
  3. View Biomass Accumulation Model screencast tutorial with students to introduce the basics of the model.
  4. Students Follow the instructions in Student Worksheet 1 found at the end of the GLOBE Biomass Accumulation Model Teacher Guide in order to explore the use of the model and to build their understanding of model inputs and outputs with respect to their study location.
  5. WRAP-UP: Record and review new terms and concepts on overhead or blackboard. Make sure all students understand what variables are contributing to the model results and how this model study relates to carbon dynamics and climate science. Discuss limitations of the model. What variables were not included? (The Background section of the Biomass Accumulation Model Teacher Guide provides a comprehensive review of key concepts. Worksheet 1 can be used to evaluate students' ability to use the model and identify essential concepts related to the model).

Assessment

Assessment suggestions are located on page 7 of the GLOBE Biomass Accumulation Model Teacher's Guide. The Teacher's Guide also contains Teacher Versions of student worksheets.
